NBC Olympics Shaun White, Sean White Olympics 2010 and Shaun White Olympics 2010 pictures, photos

VANCOUVER: NBC Olympics Shaun White, Sean White Olympics 2010 and Shaun White Olympics 2010 pictures, photos. The men’s halfpipe competition was won by Shaun White. He bagged the gold medal at Cypress Mountain in front of thousands of fans. This was his first run score of 46.8. Besides, he also created history as his back-to-back Olympic gold medals.

The other player to throw a challenge to him was Peetu Piiroinen of Finland. He put some pressure on White during the competition with a second run score of 45.0. He ended up with the silver medal.

The third position was occupied by Scotty Lago of the United States. He used a big first run to win the bronze medal. It was a surprise win.

From the beginning of the game White was the favorite to win the gold. In his event he is a celebrity and it is difficult for others to defeat him. He was known figure inside the athletes’ village, which was occupied by other halfpipe players. He had moved to Cypress Mountain after the opening ceremony of the game was over. Besides, his story has grabbed headlines. And reporters and magazines have unfailingly carried his stories. Many sports magazine ran his picture on the cover.

After winning the gold, White said: “It feels good. Heavy lies the crown.”

Of his second run: “I felt it was such a miracle run … I just felt like I didn’t come all the way to Vancouver not to pull out the big guns. I put down the tricks I’ve worked so hard on. My coach said at the top, ‘Don’t do this unless you’re gonna stomp it.’ ”

Lady Wolverines blast BTW-Tuskegee for a second-straight year

There are different ways Booker T. Washington coach Charles Biggers might explain how his Golden Eagles suffered a second-consecutive blowout in the Class 5A Central Regional tournament.

“I guess call it the Carver mystic,” he explained.

The Lady Wolverines led 38-7 at the half and never looked back in a 60-35 rout of BTW-Tuskegee. It was the second-straight year Carver had won in large fashion over the Eagles.

Carver won last year’s semifinal meeting, 74-41.

“I can’t really explain it,” Carver coach Michelle Simmons said. “We didn’t know what to expect since we didn’t get to play them this year. We felt like they had some good players. They had given Lanier their first (and only regular-season) loss. We had respect for them.”

That respect probably waned before the end of the first quarter when Carver took a 19-3 lead. BTW-Tuskegee missed 23 of its first 24 shots in the game as well as the first six free throws.

“Déjà vu all over again,” Biggers said. “I have expressed all season that we can’t dig a hole like we did last year, especially against a team like Carver. But we missed free throws. We missed lay ups. We had a slew of turnovers.

“When we beat Lanier, it was almost unexplainable. I admit I was surprised.”

The large margin allowed Carver to work on several new facets of its offense. Simmons made sure she gave many of the six injured players on her roster time on the court to see how they would hold up.

“We lost a player to an ACL (Tanishia Harris), two sprained ankles and one we thought had a concussion,” Simmons said. “We needed to see who could go on the bigger court.”

One of those with a bad wheel was forward Shatavia Farris, who finished with 14 points to lead all scorers. Her injury came against Selma in the area championship.

It is one reason why she wants to play the Saints again.

“I am fine, thank you,” Farris said with a smile. “I only got to play them one time this year so I’d like one more shot.”

BTW-Tuskegee finished 9 of 57 from the field for 15.8 percent. They missed all 12 3-point attempts and suffered 18 turnovers.

Carver played 13 players on its roster and shot 42 percent for the game. The Wolverines also missed all five 3-point attempts.

Carver will play in the regional final on Friday at 1:20 p.m.

NBA All-Star Game Bests

After possibly the worst slam dunk contest on Saturday, the real dunkers took court Sunday night and had a fest. It was LeBron James soaring, double-clutching for reverse dunks. It was Dwyane Wade throwing down ally-oops. It was Dwight Howard skying for one handed slams. It was Carmelo Anthony two-handing it through the orange, iron hoop.

Oh, and there was some decent non-dunking basketball played as well. This is what the greatest pickup game is supposed to look like. Two teams with outrageous shooting percentages, some wtf-show-me-the-f’ing-replay moments, and a gritty ending with the score in doubt until the final horn.

Aside from a few stretches this was a cleaner game than most NBA All-Star games. The East dominated when they could get out and run, while the West didn’t back down and controlled play down the stretch to make it close. A dumb foul by Deron Williams on Wade set in motion about 45 minutes worth of back and forth free-throws and timeouts. Until an ill-conceived Anthony three-point attempt fell short giving the East a 141-139 victory.
All-Star Game Position Awards
Point Guard:

Chauncey Billups:

Billups had 17 points and five assists, but it was his play in helping lead the West back to tie the score down the stretch that gave him the nod. Mr. Big Shot was five of eight from behind the arch and scored five of the seven points down the stretch when the West looked like it might fold. His defense on LeBron and Wade down the stretch was also tight and kept the game close

Runner Up: Steve Nash–4 points, 13 assists in 20 minutes

Shooting Guard:

Dwyane Wade:

The All-Star MVP took flight from the opening tip en route to a double-double, 28 points, 11 assists–he also had six rebounds and five steals. It seemed as though Wade was either giving an alley-oop or receiving one every time there was a transition opportunity for the East. He showed the kind of explosive scorer and unselfish teammate he can be with skilled players around him–hey Miami, you better give him help soon, or he will leave South Beach to play with one of his All-Star buddies come summer time.

Runner up: Joe Johnson–10 points…..you have to love that the West had zero shooting guards on its roster.
Forward:

LeBron James

The first forward spot goes to King James who reminded us why we were so disappointed that he bowed out of the dunk competition. James had several of his, ‘did he just do what I think he did?’ moments. Whether they were fast-break bulldozer moments, or slicing the lane double-clutching reverse dunk moments, or leap for the sky alley-oop moments, LeBron reminded us why he is the best at doing it all going for 25 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.

Runner up: Dirk Nowitzki–22 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists
Forward:

Carmelo Anthony

No I’m not going to differentiate between small and power forward, because let’s be honest, LeBron isn’t very “small” for a forward. Plus Anthony kept the West close during the first half, leading the West with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists. Some may whine that Anthony played more and took more shots because George Carl was on the bench, but hey when it pays to be in bed with the man right (umm…that didn’t come out right…)

Runner Up: Chris Bosh: 23 points 10 rebounds

Center:

Dwight Howard:

Howard was the only center who absolutely deserved to be in this game and he showed it going for 17 points, five rebounds, three blocks and an assist. He had some of the most impressive dunks of the night, including a coast-to-coast slam. He also drained a three pointer and proved how much fun he has when out on the court with players of his caliber. His Charles Barkley impersonation was almost spot on.

Runner Up: Pau Gasol–13 points, six rebounds (Again, I know he’s not a center, but in a real NBA All-Star game, he would have been.)

Philadelphia Inquirer: "Former Penn assistant made Cornell a hoops power"

Cornell coach Steve Donahue talks with his team during a December game against La Salle. Donahue interviewed for the Penn job in 2006, but the Quakers went with Glen Miller instead.

Former Penn assistant made Cornell a hoops power

By Keith Pompey
Philadelphia Inquirer
February 12, 2010

Folks weren't expecting much when Steve Donahue became men's basketball coach at Cornell.

Young and unproven, the former Penn assistant would become just another hapless leader of a doormat program. Or so people thought.

Ten years later, Donahue is being recognized for completely turning the Big Red program around.

Once known mostly as a hockey-loving campus, the school in Ithaca, N.Y., is now a hoops haven.

Consecutive Ivy League crowns, NCAA tournament appearances, a national ranking, you name it. Donahue, 47, brought it all to a program that had recorded just 11 winning seasons since 1967-68.

"After each season, we go back and remember what it was like before we turned this thing around," Donahue said. "It was very, very difficult. I'm not going to say it wasn't. There were a lot of trying times."

Penn (3-14, 2-2 Ivy) will find out just how dominant Cornell (20-3, 6-0) has become in tonight's 7 o'clock matchup at the Palestra.

Cornell is ranked 22d in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. This season marks the first time since 1951 that Cornell was ranked nationally. The last time an Ivy League team appeared in a national poll was in 1997-98, when Princeton finished eighth in the AP poll and 16th in the coaches' poll.

Like that Princeton squad, teams are having a tough time beating Cornell. The Big Red have won eight straight since they nearly upset No. 1 Kansas on Jan. 6.

The Big Red are on pace to clinch a third straight Ivy League title and the NCAA tournament berth that accompanies it. Not bad for a team that never made the tourney before winning the Ancient Eight crown two seasons ago.

That was the first time in 20 seasons that a school not named Penn or Princeton claimed the Ivy title outright.

"Well, he's doing a tremendous job putting together his basketball program, not surprisingly so," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy, who was Penn's head coach when Donahue was a Quakers assistant for 10 seasons.

"Steve had a great work ethic and feel for the game," Dunphy said. "So it was just a matter of time before Cornell was in very good shape as a basketball program."

But back in 2006, Donahue had hoped to leave Cornell to coach at Penn. That's when Dunphy left to replace John Chaney at Temple.

Donahue was granted an interview. Instead of going with the Springfield (Delaware County) native with Penn ties, the Quakers hired Glen Miller.

Miller turned out to be a big disappointment, compiling a 45-52 record in a little over three seasons. He was fired and replaced by interim coach Jerome Allen in December after the Quakers dropped to 0-7.

Penn went 22-9 and made the NCAA tourney in Miller's first season. The Quakers, however, followed that with 13-18 and 10-18 records before this season.

But Donahue, a Cardinal O'Hara and Ursinus College product, said he is not upset about not getting the Penn job.

"I appreciate that they were willing to consider me, to be honest," Donahue said. "At that point, I hadn't achieved much at Cornell, probably, in a lot of people's eyes. Although I knew I was doing it the right way.

"I never had bad feelings, in all honesty. I appreciate that I was able to continue up here and build what we have up here."

But what about next season?

Would he consider taking the Penn job if athletic director Steve Bilsky offers it?

"You know, when I'm in the season, it's hard to [think about going] anywhere," he said. "I'm so wrapped up in what we are trying to do here. It's not something I even feel like commenting on."

For now, Donahue insists he's only focused on beating Penn tonight and Princeton tomorrow and ultimately winning another Ivy title.

"I'm very proud of him," said Skip Werley, a close friend and mentor. "It's sort of like having a son that has done well."

Donahue played for Werley at Ursinus and later coached under him at Springfield (Delco) High. He also coached under current Lafayette coach Fran O'Hanlon at Monsignor Bonner and Herb Magee at Philadelphia University before moving on to Penn.

ICC’s Alex Rowland finishes third in the first MACJC golf event of the year

Last spring, Alex Rowland of Itawamba Community College finished two strokes away from winning the MACJC State title. In this year’s first ever of the 2010 season on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Houston native again finished two strokes out of the winner’s circle.

Rowland had a 75-76 for a two-day total of 151, which was third best in the event that showcased all of the community and junior college teams. Derin Petite of Co-Lin won the tournament with a 73-76, 149 total while Grant Goforth of Northwest was second with a 72-78, 150 total.

“I thought Alex did a great job under not the best weather conditions,” said ICC head coach David Rather, who is his 21st season at the helm of the ICC program. “If he continues to work hard, he has a great shot at finishing this year in Phoenix at the NJCAA National Tournament.”

One of Rowland’s Indian teammates, Adrian Dyson, who is a Florida native, finished tied for 22nd with a 77-87, 154. ICC’s Montana May of Saltillo was 42nd with an 87-84, 171 total. Corinth’s Jay Henderson was tied for 50th with a 88-86, 174 and Bobby Parks of Saltillo completed the Itawamba five-some with a 62nd place finish after his 86-98, 184 total.

As a team, Itawamba finished right in the middle of the pack in sixth place with a 325-333, 658 total. Host school, Gulf Coast, was the team champion with a 313-315, 628 total.

“I thought we did o.k. for the first event of the season,” added Rather. “Five teams finished ahead of us and we were better than five other teams, although we finished just one stroke out of fifth place.”
